The day that was long awaited for finally came last week: Halloween! And let me tell you, Halloween was done big here at Colegio Alkor!
How rude of me, I got so excited to blog about Halloween that I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Karla and I am from The United States. This is my first year working here at Colegio Alkor as an English language assistant. I work mostly in secondary, but I have some primary classes as well. With that being said, it is no surprise that because I am American, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays!
Students and families carved pumpkins for the jack o’lantern contest, all of which were displayed in the entrance of the ESO building. Ghost stories were told during class. Classroom doors were decorated with spooky themes, as well as the hallways. The most terrifying‒without a doubt‒was the wall with the scary periodic table of elements. I mean, nothing is scarier than chemistry, right?
Although not correlated to Halloween, but instead to Dia de los Muertos, one of my favorite adornments was the altar that was placed near the entrance of the ESO building. Of course, this was my favorite because I come from a Mexican heritage and the altar was very similar to the ones in Mexico. It was decorated with aged pictures of the professors here at Colegio Alkor and offerings were placed throughout. It was very colorful, staying true to Mexican tradition!
Attractions
With all this build up, you could smell the festivity as soon as you stepped foot onto Colegio Alkor. The campus was decorated, ready for a day of fun activities, and so were the students dressed up in their costumes. One of the biggest attractions was the haunted house the students in ESO prepared. I didn’t think the students in 2°ESO could scare me, but they proved me wrong. I loved it so much, I went back a 2nd time.
The students in ESO weren’t the only ones that prepared fun activities, the primary students also did. Those in 6° primary had a dance choreography which they performed with their La Casa de Papel costumes during the late morning. It was outstanding and super fun! I was definitely dancing along with them in the audience.
In the afternoon, the primary students completed exciting activities in their classrooms while the secondary students had activities in the courtyard. For the secondary students, there was a wide range of activities, including bobbing for apples, scavenger hunts, water balloon tossing, tug-of-war and much more!
As I said earlier, Halloween was done BIG here at Colegio Alkor. I don’t even think that schools in the USA celebrate it as much as they did here. Halloween was a day full of amusing activities that was enjoyed by students, staff, and families!
