Thanksgiving was started by the Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts who chose this as a day to give thanks for their first successful harvest. Today, we traditionally celebrate on the fourth Thursday in November with friends and family and lots and lots of good food.
This year we are all experiencing a totally new kind of Thanksgiving holiday. As our country and world is gripped by a pandemic, many of us will not be able to travel home to spend the day with our family. But hold on a second, that doesn’t mean that we should just phone it in and order Domino’s.
This Thanksgiving is an opportunity to create all new traditions and think outside the box.
This Thanksgiving is an opportunity to create all new traditions and think outside the box. Here are some ideas for your very own “covid-friendly” 2020 Thanksgiving celebration!!
-
Opt for a chicken instead of a turkey.
We all know how difficult and time-consuming cooking a whole turkey can be. This year, instead of spending hours cooking your bird to perfection, try ordering some yummy chickens instead! Or, if you are an adventurous cook, you could take advantage of having a smaller guest list this year and try out a new recipe for a fancy Cornish game hen or even roast duck!

Eat outdoors or let in some fresh air!
The safest way to meet family and friends in these uncertain times is to share a meal together outside at a safe distance. Instead of eating in your dining room, bring your Thanksgiving feast to the park or eat outside on your patio! If that is not an option for you:
- open your windows wide,
- turn up the heat (just for one day!),
- put on a youtube video of a cozy fireplace on your TV,
- and bundle up in your warmest Christmas sweaters.

Help those in need
This year of all years, consider volunteering your time or donating food or money to an organization that you support. This is a great time of year to think about aiding NGOs fighting world hunger. Also, you can take a moment to check in with your elderly neighbors, friends, and family and offer to help them or bring them a Thanksgiving meal.
Community is so very important and is something we are all so lucky and thankful to have, so now is a great time to show your support by volunteering alongside those you love and care about.
