Thanksgiving, a holiday to give thanks

This day is called Thanksgiving, a holiday to give thanks for everything and everyone we have in our lives. This festivity is traditionally celebrated in the United States but for many years now it has also been celebrated in this school and in others.

Today is a really special day for many people, including myself and many teachers of our school, and it’s a day to be grateful for everything we have in our lives not only material things like your Playstation 5 or your phone but more importantly those things that we take for granted like your family, your friends, clean water or a place to live.

Even though this is a relatively new celebration, because it wasn’t declared a national holiday until 1863, many historians say the first thanksgiving was celebrated on 1621, but to explain this with more detail we need to go back a year before.

On 1620 the Pilgrims left England in a ship, called Mayflower, to a New World. When they arrived they discovered that they weren’t the only ones in that place, there were Native Americans that had been there long before the Pilgrims arrived.

This is a relatively new celebration, because it wasn’t declared a national holiday until 1863.

At the beginning the two groups were afraid of each other but withing a few months they started to help each others and with this help most of the Pilgrims survived the winter. Because of this reason they celebrated, some historians say in that first Thanksgiving there were only Pilgrims and others say that both Native Americans and Pilgrims were together, I guess we will never know for sure.

Nowadays, Thanksgiving in America is a celebration full of family reunions and helping others. A time of foods like the famous turkey, mac and cheese (my personal favorite) and pumpkin pie. A time we celebrate with our family and friends watching football and parades on TV. A holiday I think should be celebrated worldwide because it involves been kind to others and bringing families together to give thanks for everything they have.
