After having a looooooooong January, we are ecstatic to finally welcome February into the new year! Even though February is a short month—in fact, it´s actually one day longer this time around due to the leap year—there´s lots to celebrate during it!
First and foremost, the most obvious, is Valentine´s Day. The day where we celebrate all types of love: romance, friendship and family.
We can´t forget about Carnaval either! Unfortunately, Carnaval isn´t celebrated in the USA, but that only makes it more exciting for us Americans living in Spain!
Black History Month
We do have one more celebration in the USA that doesn´t occur here: Black History Month, also known as African American History Month. Black History Month is celebrated throughout the entire month of February and it serves as a way to recognize and honor important people and events that have contributed to history. At Colegio Alkor, we are honoring these people by having informative posters laid out throughout the halls. Also, the door of the teacher´s lounge has been transformed into an exquisite figure that celebrates the beauty of Black people and their culture, all things to be celebrated!
Valentine´s Week at Alkor
This week, our student´s have been feeling the love to get ready for Valentine´s Day. For our whole school project, every class hasa decorated a heart. Each student made a small heart to add to their class´big heart. On this heart, they wrote compliments to other students, or things that they love. Additionally, the native assistants encouraged the students to make hearts for their teachers to show their appreication for all the hard work the teachers do. By the end of the week, the school hall´s looked fantastic and festive with all the hearts displayed.
Febrero: un mes de agradecimientos
Después de un laaargo enero, hemos dado la bienvenida a un nuevo mes. Aunque febrero se nos ha hecho muy corto, en realidad es un día más esta vez debido al año bisiesto, ¡hay mucho que celebrar durante el mismo!
Ante todo, lo más recurrente fue el día de San Valentín. En ese día celebramos todo tipo de amor: romántico, de amistad, fraternal… Ah, y no nos olvidemos del Carnaval. Por desgracia el Carnaval no se celebra en los EE. UU. ¡Pero eso solo lo hace más emocionante para los estadounidenses que vivimos en España!
Mes de la Historia Negra (Afroamericana)
Tenemos una celebración más en los Estados Unidos que no se celebra aquí: el Mes de la Historia Negra, también conocido como el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana. El Mes de la Historia Negra se celebra durante todo el mes de febrero. Nos sirve para reconocer y honrar a personas y eventos importantes que han contribuido a la historia. En el Colegio Alkor, estamos honrando a estas personas a través de carteles informativos distribuidos en los pasillos. Además, la puerta de la sala de profesores se ha transformado en una figura exquisita que celebra la belleza de los negros y su cultura. ¡Todo esto hemos celebrado en febrero!
Día de los enamorados
En Primaria cada clase ha decorado un corazón. Cada estudiante realizó un pequeño corazón para agregar al gran corazón de su clase. En este corazón, escribieron cumplidos a otros estudiantes, o cosas que aman. Además, los asistentes nativos alentaron a los estudiantes a que hicieran corazones que mostraran su aprecio por todo el trabajo duro que hacen los profes. Al final de la semana, el salón de la escuela se veía fantástico y festivo con todos los corazones expuestos.
